Unilock Roofing: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Unilock roofing systems are built for northern frost cycles, but here in Austin, the failure point is almost always the same: heat-aged sealing collars and UV-degraded interlocking clips. We stock Unilock-compatible replacement parts and our typical installed repair runs $400 – $1,800, with most single-point fixes done in one afternoon. You’ll usually notice it after a big storm or the first August heat spike, when a loose paver-lock roof section starts rattling, lifting at the seam, or letting water darken a corner of the underlayment.

Before you climb up there with a caulk gun and a prayer, know that the Unilock Roofing system is a niche product with tighter tolerances than standard shingle or tile. That’s good news for durability, but it means the wrong off-the-shelf part just buys you three months. We’ll walk you through what fails, what it costs, and when you’re better off letting Trevor and our crew handle it.
Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock’s roofing line includes the EcoStone, Rustic Slate, and Cobble Paver profiles, each with its own interlocking geometry. If you’ve got an EcoStone, your roof panels use a two-tab locking collar, while the Rustic Slate runs on a single-channel floating clip. That difference matters more than you’d think: a Rustic Slate clip installed on an EcoStone panel will hold for about a season, then let go. We’ve seen it happen on houses near South Congress where a handyman “just made it fit” with a rubber mallet.
Finding your model is simple. Look at the underside of any exposed paver near the roofline edge. Unilock stamps a four-digit series code on the underside lip, usually starting with UL-R for roofing-grade product. If the stamp’s worn off (Austin sun does that after about six years), measure the interlock tab width: EcoStone runs 7/8 inch, Rustic Slate runs 1-1/16 inch. We always recommend OEM Unilock collars for the first replacement cycle because the polymer blend is matched to the panel expansion rate in Texas heat. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but in our Austin installs, we’ve found they don’t carry the same 15-year weather-ability rating. Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Unilock, so we carry both and we’ll tell you honestly which one your roof deserves.

Signs Your Unilock Roofing Is Failing
- Panel lift at the seam. The interlocking tabs lose their grip when the collar polymer shrinks from heat-cycling. You’ll see one edge sitting 1/4 inch proud of its neighbor. That’s the collar losing its interference fit.
- Rust-colored staining at the eave. Unilock’s internal steel micro-clips are spec’d for coastal environments, but a cracked collar lets moisture sit directly on the clip. Once the rust wicks into the paver’s inner webbing, you’ll see streaking after every rain.
- Rattling or creaking in wind. A loose panel flexes hundreds of times per wind event. Austin’s spring storm season, especially March through early June, exposes this fast. The noise is the clip failing in slow motion.
- Water-darkened underlayment corners. If you can see the synthetic felt from the gutter line and it’s dark at the corners, a collar has fully separated. Water’s already reached the decking; the longer it sits, the more the substrate costs to replace.
- Visible gap where the panel meets the drip edge. Unilock panels expand and contract about 3/16 inch per 10 feet between January and August in Austin. A gap beyond that means the panel’s broken free of its track and is now just sitting there, waiting for a strong norther.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin homeowners, a single-point Unilock roofing repair typically runs $400 – $1,800 installed, with the bulk of that being access, prep, and the part itself. A simple collar swap on one panel sits at the low end. Replacing a full section of Rustic Slate panels with new clips and underlayment repair pushes toward the top. What drives the number up: roof pitch, second-story access, whether the underlying synthetic felt has already delaminated, and whether you want all collars replaced as a set (we usually recommend that on roofs ten years or older; doing one at a time means you’ll see us again in spring).
Every job gets a written price before we order parts. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. Parts are line-itemed: collar counts, clip counts, any felting material, and labor. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, including a free second visit with no service call.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: measure the interlock tab width, snap a few photos of any lifted edges, and compare against the stamp code. That information helps us bring the right collar on the first trip, which saves you time. What we’d rather you not do: pry a panel loose without releasing the compression channel, force a different-size clip with a mallet, or caulk the seam shut. A roof is a structural surface, not a patio paver job. A slipped panel on a pitched roof is a fall risk, and a torqued clip can crack the panel’s mounting track, which turns a $500 fix into a full panel replacement.

FAQs

In Austin’s heat and UV, Unilock polymer collars typically last 10 to 15 years before the interference fit begins to degrade, though south-facing slopes on two-story homes in full sun can show collar fatigue in as little as 8 years. The panels themselves often outlast the collars, which is why we usually replace the collar set once before the panels ever need attention. Call (325) 225-5429 if you’re approaching that window and want an inspection before storm season.
A panel with intact interlock geometry can often be refitted with a new OEM collar and clip set, which is a repair, not a replacement. A cracked or delaminated panel with compromised inner webbing cannot be repaired reliably and should be swapped. The deciding factor is whether the interlock tab still holds its original 7/8-inch or 1-1/16-inch width. Call (325) 225-5429 for a straight answer, and we’ll quote both paths if you like.
A single-panel collar and clip swap usually takes 3 to 4 hours on-site, including setting proper fall protection and testing panel flex. A full collar set replacement on an average Austin ranch runs a full day. We’ll give you a clear arrival window before we book the job, and the work is done by background-checked, uniformed techs. Call (325) 225-5429 to schedule, and we’ll confirm the timing in writing.
We keep OEM EcoStone and Rustic Slate collar kits on the truck for the most common Austin models, along with matching steel micro-clips and synthetic felting. Less common Cobble Paver Roofing profiles are special-ordered from Unilock’s distribution network, typically adding 3 to 5 business days. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll tell you up front whether your part is on hand or needs an order.
