Unilock Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you’re searching for Unilock kitchen remodeling in Austin, you’re likely dealing with a failed paver surface, a shifting outdoor kitchen counter, or a Unilock element that’s cracking after a few Texas summers. We install and replace Unilock pavers, grill surrounds, and outdoor kitchen hardscapes in Austin every month, and a typical Unilock kitchen remodel here runs $14,000 to $45,000 depending on linear footage, base condition, and whether you’re replacing just the surface or rebuilding the structure underneath. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a paver starts rocking underfoot, a corner sinks after a heavy rain, or the sand between joints washes out and the whole surface starts drifting. The good news is that Unilock parts are matched by size, profile, and color code, and we keep the common replacements on hand.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Our Austin Unilock kitchen work centers on the three series we see most in Central Texas backyards: the Beacon Hill Flagstone line, the Richcliff paver system, and the Brussels Block line, which is the most common Unilock product under outdoor grills and counter islands in the greater Austin area. Here’s the compatibility rule most people don’t know until it bites them: Unilock color codes matter more than the model name. A Richcliff paver in the color “Sandstone” will not match a Brussels Block in “Burgundy Red” even if both are called “tumbled,” because the dye lots differ at the factory. If you can’t find the original packaging, flip a loose paver over. Unilock stamps the series name and often the color code on the underside or along one edge. For outdoor kitchens specifically, the part that usually needs replacing isn’t the paver at all – it’s the cement board substrate (the moisture-resistant layer behind your tile) or the steel frame that holds the grill surround. Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent contractor, not a Unilock dealer or affiliate, which means we can recommend OEM Unilock materials when they’re worth the premium and solid aftermarket equivalents when they’re not.

Signs Your Unilock Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Pavers rock or wobble underfoot. This almost always means the bedding sand has washed out from underneath, usually because the edge restraint has shifted or water has found a path under the surface. Left alone, the paver will crack at the corner.
  • Joints have lost their sand and weeds are coming through. Austin’s heavy spring rains wash polymeric sand out of joints faster than most paver manufacturers expect. Once the sand is gone, the pavers drift, and the surface loses its locked-together strength.
  • A corner of the outdoor kitchen island is sinking. If the island sits on a paver base that wasn’t compacted deeply enough for Austin’s expansive clay soil, you’ll see a one-to-two-inch drop after a wet winter. This isn’t a cosmetic fix – the whole island often needs to be reset.
  • Grill surround tile is cracking or falling off. The cement board behind it has likely absorbed moisture and swelled, pushing the tile off the wall. In Austin, the cycle of summer heat and winter damp does this to improperly sealed outdoor kitchens in three to five years.
  • You see hairline cracks running across multiple pavers in a line. That’s a sign of a settling seam underneath – a joint in the concrete base or a root pushing up from below. Individual pavers don’t crack in straight lines on their own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For an Austin Unilock kitchen remodel, most jobs land between $14,000 and $45,000. At the low end, you’re looking at resurfacing an existing island: pulling the old pavers or tile, replacing the cement board substrate, and installing new Unilock surfaces without touching the frame. At the high end, we’re rebuilding the island from the ground up, often because the original base wasn’t dug deep enough for our clay soil. Here’s what those numbers include: a written line-item price before any work starts (that’s the Kingswell standard), labor for demo and haul-off, the Unilock materials themselves or a quality aftermarket equivalent you approve in advance, and a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely do yourself. You can sweep out a loose joint and add polymeric sand to stop weeds from taking root. You can check your island’s edge restraint – if the plastic edging has pulled away, push it back and stake it down. What you shouldn’t do is lift a full section of pavers and try to re-level them yourself. The base underneath is load-bearing, and once you disturb it, you’ve changed how the whole surface drains. We’ve walked onto Austin jobsites where a homeowner spent a full weekend re-leveling pavers, only to have the surface settle unevenly six weeks later and the island started leaning. If the island structure itself is involved, or the surface is more than 50 square feet, call us at (325) 225-5429. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
