Therma-Tru Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We install Therma-Tru fence systems in Austin for $3,500 to $9,000, depending on the gate hardware, post depth, and the particular Therma-Tru line you’re working with. Most owners discover they need professional fence installation after a gate sags, a post heaves out of the clay, or a section of Therma-Tru composite starts pulling away from its frame. You call us when the fence is no longer something you can ignore from the kitchen window.

We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we’ve installed enough of their fence and gate components to know the hardware cold. The thing about Therma-Tru fencing in Austin is that the heat and the ground move differently here than they do in Ohio. That’s what we’re going to talk through below.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru is better known for entry doors, but their fence and gate hardware line shares the same design DNA: fiberglass and composite profiles built around weight and thermal movement. Most Therma-Tru fence installations in Austin fall into two buckets. The first is the Classic-Craft fence gate system built around reinforced fiberglass posts and composite rails. The second is their Smooth-Star line, which is a lighter-profile composite fence board that a lot of Austin homeowners pair with metal post anchors.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha. Therma-Tru fence posts and rails are not universal. The Smooth-Star rail profile is about 1/4 inch narrower than the Classic-Craft profile, and if you swap one for the other, the pickets leave a visible gap or bind against the post sleeve. We measure the rail channel and the picket thickness before ordering anything. It takes five minutes and saves you from buying a pallet of the wrong board. Look for the Therma-Tru part label on the inside face of the gate stile, or on the end cap of the top rail. The part number starts with “TT-F” for fence components and “TT-G” for gate hardware.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: we use Therma-Tru genuine parts for the posts, rail caps, and hinge assemblies. For stainless steel post brackets and concrete anchors, we’ll use Simpson Strong-Tie or comparable aftermarket hardware that’s rated for the load. The hinge pins Therma-Tru ships are fine, but the factory post anchors tend to be lighter gauge than what we want in central Texas clay. We upgrade the anchors and tell you we did it.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Fence Installation Is Failing
- The gate drags or scrapes at the latch side. The hinge side post has settled or leaned outward. In Austin’s expansive clay, posts set less than 36 inches deep will move within three or four seasons. The Therma-Tru hinge bracket then carries the gate at a slight twist, and the latch no longer lines up.
- Pickets are popping out of the bottom rail. The composite expands and contracts with temperature, but the Austin heat accelerates the gap between the picket tab and the rail channel. Once a picket lifts free, the neighbor’s dog figures it out within a week.
- The post wobbles when you push on the top rail. The concrete footer has cracked or the post was set in soil instead of gravel and concrete. A wobbling post means the entire section is twisting, and that puts lateral load on every board joint.
- The gate hinge is squealing or visibly sagging at the top. The hinge pin or bushing has worn. Therma-Tru gate hinges use a nylon bushing that holds up well, but once grit gets into the pin bore, the bushing scores and the gate drops by as much as half an inch.
- Water stains streak the lower pickets and the boards feel soft at the base. The post was set below grade without a sealed end cap, or the rail sat directly on soil. Moisture wicks up into the composite core, and over time the board loses its structural bite on the fasteners.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a full Therma-Tru fence installation in Austin, figure $3,500 to $9,000. A typical 50-foot section with one gate runs $3,500 to $5,500. Add a second gate, or switch to the heavier Classic-Craft posts, and you’re at $6,000 to $8,000. Tear-out of an old fence, haul-away, and new concrete footers for every post push the top of the range.
Every estimate is a written, line-item price before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. That includes the Therma-Tru materials, the upgraded post anchors, all concrete and hardware, labor, and cleanup. If we open the gate and find the post footing was poured wider than expected, that’s our problem to absorb, not a change order. The whole installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if anything fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

You can absolutely reset a single leaning post yourself if you’re comfortable with a post-hole digger and a level. Dig out the old footer, set the post in gravel and concrete, let it cure before rehanging the gate. That’s a weekend job most Austin homeowners can handle.
Here’s where DIY goes sideways. If the Therma-Tru gate itself is out of square because the hinge posts moved in two directions, you’re not fixing that with shims. You need to pull the section, re-set both posts on a string line, and rehang the gate with new hinge pins. Get the post spacing off by even half an inch and the gate will bind or swing shut on its own. High-tension gate springs and self-closing hinge mechanisms are also not things to take apart without knowing how they release. If the gate has an auto-close spring under load, call us at (325) 225-5429 and we’ll sort it out without anyone losing a thumb.
FAQs

The Therma-Tru composite boards themselves typically last 20 to 25 years, but the post anchors and gate hardware in central Texas clay usually need attention at the 8 to 10 year mark. The boards don’t rot the way wood does; the weak points are the footers and the hinge pins. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll tell you honestly whether you need a full re-set or just new hardware.
Yes, in most cases we can reset leaning posts, replace worn hinge pins, and re-secure popped pickets without buying new sections. If the composite boards themselves are soft or cracked at the fastener line, patching won’t hold and you’re better off replacing the affected run. Either way, we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
A single 50-foot section with one gate is typically a two-day job: day one for demolition, post holes, pouring footers and letting them cure overnight; day two for rails, pickets, gate hang, and hardware adjustment. Larger yards with multiple gates can run three to four days. We’ll give you a defined arrival window and a clean job site at the end of every day.
We stock the common wear parts, which includes Therma-Tru gate hinge pins, latch assemblies, rail end caps, and stainless steel post brackets. Full composite boards and rails are special-ordered per job so the profile matches what’s already on your fence. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
