Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Tamko-compatible driveway and paver materials across Austin, with typical installed pricing running $7,000 – $18,000 for a full paver driveway and $3,500 – $11,000 for a paver patio. Most owners call us after a Texas summer has done its work: pavers have shifted, the sand joints have washed out, or a section of the driveway has settled into a low spot that holds water after every rain. You’ll usually spot the problem before you can name it. A corner paver rocks underfoot. Weeds push up through seams that used to be tight. Or the surface that looked flat in March now drains toward the garage instead of away from it.

Tamko’s paver and driveway product line runs under a few different series names, and the compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. The most common lines we see on Austin driveways are the Tamko TW Paver series and the larger-format driveway pavers sold through regional suppliers in the Texas market. The way to identify yours: flip up a loose paver and look for the manufacturer stamp on the underside, or pull your original installation paperwork for the product code. Tamko pavers typically run 60mm thickness for residential driveways and 80mm for commercial or heavy-vehicle applications. The 60mm paver is fine for cars and light trucks; if you’re parking an F-250 or a work van with a full load, the thicker paver is the one you want.

On the OEM question: Tamko-manufactured pavers are the cleanest match when you’re patching a section, because the color, texture, and dimensional tolerance will line up with what’s already in the ground. Quality aftermarket pavers from established manufacturers can perform just as well, but the color match is where things go sideways. A paver that’s one shade off looks fine in the showroom and wrong on your driveway. If you’re replacing more than a third of the surface, we’ll usually recommend re-laying the whole thing so the finish reads as one surface, not a patch job.

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Rocking or loose pavers. The base underneath has shifted or washed out. In Austin’s clay-heavy soil, this usually traces back to water getting where it shouldn’t be. The paver itself isn’t the problem; what’s under it is.
  • Washed-out joints. That sand between the pavers isn’t decorative. It locks the pavers in place. When it goes, the pavers start working against each other and edges chip.
  • Low spots that hold water. Austin gets rain in bursts. If water ponds on your driveway for more than an hour after a storm, the base has settled unevenly and the surface is telling you exactly where.
  • Cracked or spalled pavers. “Spalling” just means the top surface has started to flake or peel. In our climate, this is often a material that absorbed water and then got cooked by a 100-degree August day. Freeze-thaw damage is less common here, but it does happen during the occasional hard freeze.
  • Weeds through the seams. Weeds don’t punch through solid pavers. They come up through joints where the sand has already failed. If you’re pulling weeds every week, you’re treating the symptom, not the cause.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Tamko paver driveway replacement in Austin, plan on $7,000 – $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, access, and the condition of the base underneath. A paver patio typically lands between $3,500 and $11,000. What drives the number up or down: the size of the area, whether the existing base can be re-compacted and reused or needs to be dug out and rebuilt, and the paver style you choose. That price includes demolition and haul-away of the old surface, base preparation, paver installation, joint sand, and compaction. It also includes our written price before any work starts, so the number we quote is the number on the invoice. Every driveway and paver job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside that first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every project.

DIY or Call Us?

This is one area where the honest answer is: it depends on the size of the problem. If you’ve got one rocking paver, you can pull it up, add a little bedding sand, and tap it back down. That’s a Saturday morning job. But if you’re chasing a low spot, if water is pooling, or if a whole section has shifted, the base underneath is the problem, and fixing the base means pulling up a meaningful chunk of the surface and re-compacting it correctly. That’s not a paver problem anymore; it’s an earthwork problem. Getting the base wrong on a Texas clay lot is how you end up with the same failure six months from now.

Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call us at (325) 225-5429 and we’ll have someone out to look at it, give you a written number, and tell you exactly what’s going on underneath those pavers.
