Schluter Windows & Doors: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Schluter window and door installation in Austin typically runs $800 to $2,800 per opening depending on size, trim profile, and whether you’re replacing a failed sill or pulling a full frame. We keep the most common Schluter-compatible profiles and sealing systems on our trucks, so most repairs happen in a single visit. Where Austin homeowners usually catch this first is water: a soft spot in the drywall under a window after a hard September rain, a door that sticks when the humidity builds, or a bit of daylight showing through the corner of a frame that used to close tight. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s window and door line covers several distinct systems, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The KERDI-FLEX strips and KERDI-BOARD reveal profiles are sized for specific panel thicknesses, so a 1/2-inch reveal from a 2009 install is not interchangeable with the 5/8-inch profile used on newer Schluter-specified openings. Look for the stamped code on the interior edge of the profile or the gray fleece backing; that stamp tells you the model family and production run.
For most Austin homes, the real compatibility issue is not the window itself but the waterproofing collar around it. Schluter’s system relies on layered fleece and membrane transition strips that fail differently in our climate than they do in, say, Ohio. The OEM strips carry a Schluter part number and match the original membrane thickness exactly; aftermarket equivalents are often a hair thinner, which is enough to break the seal bond in a wall that sees 100-degree afternoon heat followed by 40-degree evening drops in January. We stock both OEM and a short list of aftermarket parts we’ve tested, and we’ll tell you which one a given job actually needs, not whichever one happens to be on the shelf.

Signs Your Schluter Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Discoloration or soft drywall beneath a window corner. The fleece-to-membrane bond has broken and water is wicking down the rough opening. This is the most common failure we see in Austin, and it’s almost always on the west-facing wall where afternoon sun bakes the exterior flange.
- A door that won’t latch in August, then swings free in January. Schluter’s expandable foam and fleece transitions change size with humidity swings. If the jamb was set when the slab was dry, or without a Schluter-spec gap, the door’s reveal moves enough to throw off the strike plate.
- Condensation you can’t wipe away, along the inside edge of the glass. That’s a failed seal in the insulated glass unit, not a Schluter profile problem, but it usually shows up first near the Schluter reveal because that’s where the warm interior air meets the cool aluminum or PVC. We fix the glass and re-seat the reveal at the same time.
- Grit or sand coming through the weatherstripping after a windstorm. Central Texas dust is fine enough to get past a worn corner seal. The membrane gasket at the sill has likely compressed past its recovery point, and the fix is a new Schluter-spec transition strip, not another tube of caulk.
- Visible cracks in the corner reveal or trim profile. UV exposure and thermal cycling will eventually make PVC profiles brittle. It’s a materials reality in this climate, and it’s a straightforward part swap when caught before water gets behind the profile.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Schluter sill, reveal, or transition strip replacement in Austin runs roughly $180 to $520 including the part and our labor to pull the old profile, dry the rough opening if needed, and set the new piece. A full window or door opening that needs membrane replacement, reframing, and re-flashing lands in the $900 to $2,800 range we quoted above. What drives that number is access: a ground-floor window on a brick veneer wall is a half-day job, while a second-story opening on a stucco exterior is a full day or more once the scaffolding goes up.
Every quote is written, not spoken. You get the part number, the labor line, and the total before we touch anything, and that number doesn’t change at the door. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise is on the invoice in plain language: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s an actual contractual commitment, not a sales line.
DIY or Call Us?
What a homeowner can do safely: wipe down the reveal and the interior flange, note where water is showing up, and check for daylight around the frame from inside. That diagnosis helps you tell us exactly what you’re seeing, and it costs nothing. What we’d stop you from doing yourself is pulling the reveal profile or cutting into the waterproofing collar. Schluter’s system fails by degree: the outer layer looks fine while the inner fleece has already separated, and by the time you see the problem from the outside, you’re days away from rot in the rough opening. Also, if the window is on an upper floor or the door has shifted in its frame, the seal is under tension and it can snap when you unseat it.
Call us at (325) 225-5429 instead. We’ll walk through what you’re seeing, tell you whether it needs a truck or just a closer look, and give you a written number before any work starts. That’s how we’ve done it in Austin for well over a decade.
FAQs

A correctly installed Schluter opening lasts 15 to 25 years before the fleece or profile reaches the end of its service life, but the Austin climate knocks a few years off that for west-facing openings. The membrane and profiles themselves are not what fails first; it’s the UV exposure and thermal cycling that degrade the materials from the outside in. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll tell you whether your opening is at the repair stage or the replace stage.
Usually yes, if the failure is in the reveal, the transition strip, or the gasket and we catch it before water has compromised the rough opening. Once the plywood or OSB behind the Schluter system has started to rot, you are in full-replacement territory, and the repair is a framing job, not a parts job. We’ll open it up and show you what’s there before we quote you the next step.
A single reveal or sill replacement is a half-day to full-day visit depending on access and whether the rough opening needs drying time. A full opening re-flash and membrane job is two to three days because the membrane needs cure time between layers. We schedule in a written arrival window and we show up in it.
We carry the common reveal profiles, KERDI-FLEX strips, and transition pieces for Schluter’s current residential line, and we can have OEM-specific parts from the warehouse the next day if yours is an older profile. We also stock compatible parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone systems for the kitchens and baths around those openings. Give us the stamped code on the profile and we’ll tell you if it’s on the truck or on order before we schedule anything.
Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (325) 225-5429 for a free estimate on your Schluter window or door repair in Austin. A live person answers, and you’ll have a written number before we lift a tool.
