PGT Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

PGT kitchen remodeling in Austin typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 for a full kitchen, with cabinet installation alone landing between $4,000 – $13,000 and countertops between $2,000 – $6,500. Most Austin homeowners come to us because a PGT window or sliding glass door off the kitchen has failed, or they’re planning a remodel and want windows and kitchen work handled together so the whole opening is sealed correctly the first time. Here’s what we see most often: a PGT sliding door starts sticking or fogging between the panes, and the homeowner realizes they need someone who understands both the window and the kitchen around it.

We stock and install PGT-compatible trim kits, replacement sashes, roller assemblies, and weatherstripping alongside our kitchen work. Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with PGT, but our crew has been matching PGT parts and tying them into remodels across Austin for over a decade.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT makes three main lines you’ll find in Austin kitchens: the WinGuard series (impact-rated, common in homes built after the mid-2000s), the SpectraGuard series (also impact-rated, often used for sliding glass doors), and the ClassicVue series (non-impact, value-priced, frequent in older Austin ranch homes). Each series uses different roller assemblies, sash thicknesses, and weatherstripping profiles, so the part that fits a WinGuard window won’t seat correctly in a ClassicVue frame.

The fastest way to identify what you have: open the window or door and look at the spacer between the two panes of glass near the corner. PGT etches their name and the series there. Also check the top edge of a sliding door panel for a white sticker with a 4- to 6-digit product code. If you can’t find either, measure the thickness of the glass unit itself. WinGuard and SpectraGuard typically run 7/16″ to 9/16″ thick for impact glass, while ClassicVue sits closer to 3/4″ for insulated non-impact. That single measurement tells us whether your kitchen remodel needs structural trim or a cosmetic match.

For the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: PGT still manufactures parts for all three series, but lead times for OEM rollers and sashes in Austin can stretch 3 – 6 weeks. Quality aftermarket rollers from brands like Prime-Line and CRL (C.R. Laurence) fit most PGT sliding doors and windows and last just as long when the track is adjusted correctly. The honest answer is this: if the part is under PGT’s warranty, use OEM. If it’s not, a good aftermarket roller assembly saves you weeks and $150 – $300 per opening. We’ll tell you either way before we order anything.

Signs Your PGT Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • The sliding door takes two hands to move. The roller assemblies under the door have worn flat or seized, and the nylon wheels are grinding into the aluminum track. Once that happens, the track grooves get damaged and a $40 roller replacement becomes a $300 track job.
  • Condensation between the panes won’t dry out. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed, which is common in Austin’s summer heat cycling. The PGT sash itself is fine, but the glass unit needs replacing. That’s a $150 – $400 part depending on the series and glass size.
  • The door or window won’t latch flush against the frame. This is usually a failed weatherstripping profile or a worn strike plate, not a frame problem. But if you ignore it, air leaks into the kitchen and the energy cost shows up on every August CPS bill.
  • White powder or pitting on the frame. This is aluminum oxidation, and Austin’s hard water makes it worse near kitchen sinks and dishwashers. The frame can often be cleaned and sealed, but if the corner welds have corroded, that section of frame needs replacement before a new kitchen backsplash goes in.
  • The window grinds or catches mid-track when opening over the sink. Debris and hard-water buildup in the lower track have likely bent or broken the fixed keeper or the sash guide. These are small parts, usually $15 – $40 each, but if you keep forcing the window, the sash itself will eventually crack.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

PGT kitchen remodeling work in Austin breaks down into parts-plus-labor, and we want you to see both numbers before you say yes. Here’s what we charge, written out:

  • Roller assembly replacement: $180 – $420 per door, including parts, track cleaning, and adjustment. Includes both new rollers and new stainless screws.
  • Weatherstripping replacement: $120 – $280 per window or door, depending on frame length. The profile has to match the PGT series or it won’t seat.
  • Insulated glass unit replacement: $650 – $1,400 per unit for PGT WinGuard impact glass; ClassicVue non-impact runs $300 – $700.
  • Full sash replacement: $1,200 – $2,800 per sash for impact-rated PGT; non-impact sashes run $800 – $1,500.
  • Full kitchen remodel with PGT window/door replacement: $14,000 – $45,000 depending on layout, cabinet line (we use KraftMaid and Wellborn), countertop material (Cambria and Silestone are common picks in Austin), and how many openings need new glass.

Every quote is written before work starts. Not a verbal range, not an estimate you hope holds. Our written price includes the parts, the labor, the disposal, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, no service call fee, no re-inspection fee. That’s the whole point of the way Trevor Nash built this company. You get a number on day one, and that’s the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Some of this work is safe to look at, and some of it isn’t. You can absolutely check your PGT label, measure your glass thickness, and pull a small sample of old weatherstripping out of the track. Those steps save us time and save you money. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to pull a PGT impact-rated sash out of its frame by yourself. Those units weigh 80 – 120 pounds depending on size, and if one slips while you’re lifting it over a kitchen counter, you’re looking at broken glass, a damaged countertop, and a trip to urgent care. Rolling an old door off its damaged track is the same story. Leave the heavy glass to people who do it every week.

If the track is dirty or the rollers feel worn, give us a call at (325) 225-5429 and we’ll walk you through what to check over the phone. If it needs a tool and a ladder, we’ll schedule the visit. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it.
