Owens Corning Home Additions & ADU: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Home additions and ADUs built with Owens Corning insulation and structural materials in Austin typically run $45,000 – $130,000, depending on square footage, site access, foundation type, and finish level. If your Owens Corning product has failed or is underperforming, we can identify the specific material, source the correct replacement, and install it properly the first time. Most homeowners discover the problem through higher energy bills, sagging drywall, moisture staining, or drafts that never existed when the build was new.

We’re Penhallow Remodeling Austin, an independent general contractor. We’re not affiliated with Owens Corning, but we work with their products on additions and ADUs across Austin every year.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

Owens Corning doesn’t make a single “home addition” product. The brand spans several material categories, and each has its own compatibility quirks. For Austin additions and ADUs, we most often handle Owens Corning fiberglass batt insulation (Pink Next Gen), FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene rigid board, and occasionally their roof decking or composite underlayment.
The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: FOAMULAR boards are not interchangeable between below-grade and above-grade applications. The 250 series is rated for soil contact and foundation work. The 150 and 400 series are not. We see mismatched boards on Austin ADUs where someone grabbed whatever was on the shelf at a big-box store, and two years later, the below-grade insulation has lost R-value to moisture saturation. It’s a $300 mistake that quietly adds $40 a month to an Austin electric bill.
For batt insulation, the key identifier is the R-value printed on the facing, plus the width. Austin code requires R-13 for 2×4 walls and R-19 or better for floors above crawl spaces. If your existing batt reads anything less, or if the facing is torn and moisture has wicked in, replacement is straightforward but should be done by someone who knows Austin’s climate zone and code requirements.
OEM versus aftermarket matters less for insulation than for, say, cabinet hardware or plumbing, but one thing we insist on: paper-faced batt should never be installed against concrete. It traps moisture. In an Austin ADU with slab-on-grade construction, we use unfaced batt or FOAMULAR with a separate vapor strategy. That detail alone separates a ten-year install from a thirty-year install.

Signs Your Owens Corning Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Drafts near exterior walls. Batt insulation settles or was poorly installed around electrical boxes. In Austin’s hot summers, you’ll feel the heat radiating through the wall cavity before you notice the electric bill has climbed.
- Higher cooling bills in July and August. R-value loss from moisture, compression, or gaps means your AC runs longer. A 100-degree Austin afternoon makes undersized or failing insulation obvious within one billing cycle.
- Damp drywall or musty smells in the addition. This usually means the vapor retarder is on the wrong side of the wall assembly, or rigid board was used where it shouldn’t have been. Austin’s humidity makes this a mold risk, not just a comfort problem.
- Sagging insulation batts in crawl spaces or attic areas. Improper fastening or the wrong width. Once batts sag, they leave air gaps at the top of the cavity, which defeats the R-value entirely.
- Mouse or pest sign in the insulation. Rodents tunnel through batt insulation in Austin crawl spaces and wall cavities. We find nesting material and droppings inside batts on at least a third of our ADU repair visits.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standalone insulation replacement inside an existing home addition or ADU in Austin, you’re looking at $1,800 – $6,500 depending on square footage, ceiling height, access, and whether we’re removing old material. That price includes pulling the failed batts or board, checking for the underlying cause (I can tell you in a sentence: it’s almost always water or air), sealing gaps, and installing new Owens Corning material to current Austin code.

For a full addition or ADU build from the ground up, the $45,000 – $130,000 range covers foundation, framing, insulation, drywall, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and finish work. What moves the number isn’t the insulation. It’s site prep, foundation type, kitchen or bath count, and how much Austin limestone you’re dealing with. We give you a written price before any work starts, and that price is the price on the invoice. Every job includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
Insulation is not a high-risk DIY job like garage springs or electrical panels, but it’s also not as forgiving as it looks. You can safely check for visible gaps, torn facing, and sagging batts on your own. What you shouldn’t do is climb into a 140-degree Austin attic in August and start pulling old material without a plan for disposal, PPE, and identifying the moisture source that caused the failure in the first place.
Fiberglass dust needs a respirator, and cutting rigid board without a straightedge leaves seams that eat R-value. If you want it diagnosed properly, call us at (325) 225-5429 and we’ll walk the space, find the failure point, and tell you exactly what it costs to fix before you commit to anything.
FAQs

Fiberglass batt insulation lasts 20 – 30 years when installed dry and undisturbed; rigid FOAMULAR board lasts 50 years or more. The lifespan in Austin is almost always cut short by moisture, not the material itself. If the original install had a vapor barrier mistake, you may see failure within five years. Call (325) 225-5429 for an inspection and a straight answer on whether yours is failing now.
In small sections, yes. If the problem is limited to one wall cavity or a few sagging batts, we can cut and patch. If moisture has spread through a wall assembly or the rigid board is saturated, patching just moves the problem. We’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with before we bid the job, because the written price depends on it.
A typical insulation replacement inside one existing addition or ADU takes one to two days, including removal, air sealing, and cleanup. Larger jobs with open framing or multiple rooms run longer. Before we start, you’ll have a written arrival window and a defined scope, so there’s no guesswork on the timeline.
We keep Owens Corning batt insulation and FOAMULAR board in our Austin materials inventory, along with products from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone. If your job calls for something we don’t carry that week, we source it from local Austin suppliers and confirm delivery before we schedule. Either way, the lead time is our problem, not yours.
Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll set up a time to look at your Austin addition or ADU, give you a written price, and put our 365-Day Done Right Promise on it. A live person answers, even late.
