American Standard Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
American Standard driveway and paver components in Austin typically run $7,000 – $18,000 for a full installed paver driveway, while isolated part replacement like a cracked paver, failed edge restraint, or sunken section usually lands between $350 and $2,800 depending on how much base material has to come out. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem after a heavy rain: water pools in a low spot that wasn’t there last spring, a paver shifts underfoot near the garage apron, or the sand-filled joints have washed out and weeds are pushing through. We stock common replacement pavers, polymeric joint sand, edge restraints, and base aggregate locally, so most part-matched repairs can be scheduled without waiting on a distributor.

One thing worth saying up front: Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent remodeler and installer. We’re not affiliated with American Standard, but we work with their paver and hardscape lines regularly and know the product specs, color batches, and installation tolerances that keep a repair from looking like a patch.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s hardscape line covers three main paver families: the tumbled classics (think 6×9 and 6×6 mixed-module patterns for residential driveways), the large-format 24×24 slabs used for patios and walkways, and their permeable pavers designed for Austin’s drainage-conscious neighborhoods like Mueller and Circle C. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into is color lot. American Standard pavers are produced in batches, and a “tan” paver pulled from a pallet in 2026 will not match a “tan” paver produced in 2023. Sun fading in Central Texas makes this worse by a half-shade or more in a single season.
To identify what you have, flip a loose paver and look for the stamped size code and batch number on the underside. If it’s worn smooth, measure the paver face with a tape: American Standard tumbled pavers run close to 2-3/8 inches thick, while the large-format slabs come in at just under 2 inches. For a driveway repair, thickness matters because a thinner replacement paver over a compacted base will crack under repeated vehicle weight. When we can’t pull an exact OEM batch match, we’ll tell you before we quote it, and we’ll show you a quality aftermarket equivalent side by side so you’re not surprised at install.

Signs Your American Standard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Low spots that pond water after rain. This usually means the base aggregate (the crushed stone layer under the pavers) has settled or washed out through a failed edge restraint. In Austin’s clay-heavy soils, freeze-thaw isn’t the culprit the way it is up north; it’s more often poor initial compaction or water getting under the sand bed from a downspout.
- Pavers shifting or rocking underfoot. A paver that tips when you step on it has lost its interlock. The joint sand has washed away and the paver is now riding on a thin, uneven bed. Left alone, the edges start chipping and adjacent pavers loosen up.
- Weeds or ant mounds pushing up between joints. Once the polymeric sand breaks down, weed seeds and ants move in. Ants excavate the sand bed underneath, which creates voids, which causes the paver to sink. This is especially common off Mopac and 360 where grade changes put driveway edges against natural landscaping.
- Edge pavers separating from the driveway border. The plastic or aluminum edge restraint has heave-hoed or was never spiked deep enough. Austin’s summer heat expands pavers enough that a weak edge lets the whole field drift outward, opening a gap next to the curb or walkway.
- White haze or surface flaking on individual pavers. That’s efflorescence or spalling. Efflorescence is cosmetic and can sometimes be cleaned. Spalling, where the paver face actually crumbles, is a product failure and that paver needs to be swapped before it takes out its neighbors.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Isolated paver replacement in Austin runs about $350 – $800 for a single paver and the labor to pull, re-bed, and re-sand it. A section repair covering a sunken 10×10 area typically falls between $800 and $2,800, depending on how deep we have to dig to re-compact the base. A full paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 – $18,000, which includes removing the old pavers, hauling off debris, re-grading the base, installing fresh edge restraints, laying the paver field, and sealing the joints with polymeric sand.
What drives the number up: driveway size, depth of base excavation if drainage has to be corrected, access for equipment, and whether you want a border pattern or mixed-module design. What drives it down: a smaller driveway, easy truck access, and reusing pavers that are still sound. Every quote we write includes the price of parts, labor, aggregate, and haul-off in one number before work starts. No change orders unless you change the scope. That’s the Kingswell standard, and it’s the same one I’ve held since 2004.

DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely check yourself. Clear the joints and look for washout: if sand is disappearing after every rain, that’s a drainage or edge issue, not just wear. Tap a suspicious paver with a rubber mallet and listen for a hollow sound; a hollow paver has lost bed contact. Pull up a loose paver and check for ants before you reset it. Those checks cost you nothing and they tell you a lot.
Where DIY goes wrong is in the prep. A homeowner will replace a cracked paver by dropping a new one onto uncompacted sand, and it fails again inside six months. The paver is never the only problem; the base underneath it is. If you’re dealing with a sunken section, moving water, or more than two or three shifty pavers, call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll come take a look. The estimate’s free, and we’ll tell you straight if it’s a two-paver fix or a base rebuild.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base and intact edge restraints, American Standard driveway pavers in Austin last 25 to 40 years before the field needs major work. The pavers themselves rarely fail; what goes first is the sand bed and edge restraint, usually inside 10 to 15 years depending on drainage. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll assess your driveway’s specific wear for free.
A single cracked American Standard paver can almost always be swapped out in under an hour, as long as we can match or blend the color. Repairs make sense for one to five damaged pavers. Beyond that, or if the cracking is from a failing base, replacement of the section is the honest fix. Call (325) 225-5429 for an exact quote, and the estimate’s free either way.
A single-paver swap takes about an hour on site. A 10×10 section repair usually runs half a day to a full day including base re-compaction and joint sanding. A full driveway replacement takes two to four days depending on access, drainage corrections, and paver pattern. We’ll give you a written arrival window before we start, and the crew leaves the site cleaned up at the end of each day.
We keep common American Standard pavers, polymeric joint sand, edge restraints, and crushed limestone base on hand at our Austin location. Color-matched OEM pavers for older installations may need a batch-order from the distributor, and we’ll tell you that timeline before you sign anything. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
