Quikrete Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Quikrete driveway and paver work in Austin typically runs $7,000 – $18,000 installed for a full paver driveway and $4,500 – $12,000 for a poured concrete driveway, depending on square footage, base prep, and finish. We stock the Quikrete product lines local homeowners ask for most, and we can usually get on your calendar within a week for an estimate. Most people find us after a Texas summer cracks a slab, or when tree roots under a paver bed turn a flat walkway into a roller coaster.

If you’re standing in your driveway right now looking at a crack that’s widened from hairline to gap, or pavers that have sunk into a low spot that catches water after every rain, you’re on the right page. This guide covers which Quikrete products fit what we do, what failure looks like, what replacement costs here, and whether you should grab a trowel or pick up the phone.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete makes a broad range of concrete and paver products, and the version you need depends on what’s already in the ground. For driveway slabs, the workhorse is Quikrete’s 80-lb Concrete Mix, typically poured at a 4-inch slab thickness over a compacted base. For paver driveways, the key product isn’t the paver itself but the base and joint material: Quikrete Paver Base, Paver Sand, and Polymeric Jointing Sand. The pavers themselves may be Quikrete-branded or from another manufacturer, but the installation system is what determines whether the driveway stays flat through five Austin summers.

The compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: you can’t just lay pavers on bare Texas clay and expect them to hold. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture more than almost any substrate in the country. A proper Quikrete paver driveway needs 4 – 6 inches of compacted paver base underneath, then 1 inch of leveling sand, then the pavers, then polymeric sand swept into the joints. Skip the base and the driveway fails within two years. We also work with Belgard and Unilock pavers alongside Quikrete installation products, so if you have a specific paver line in mind, we can tell you honestly whether it’s worth the cost difference.

One note on sourcing: Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Quikrete. We buy the product from local suppliers and stand behind the installation with our own guarantee.

Signs Your Quikrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Cracks wider than a quarter inch. Hairline cracks are normal as concrete cures. A crack you can fit a quarter into means the slab is moving, usually because the base settled or water got underneath and eroded support.
  • Sinking or low spots that hold water. If you get a puddle that sits for more than an hour after rain, the sub-base has failed under that section. In Austin, this is almost always clay soil shifting with drought and flood cycles.
  • Pavers that rock or tilt when you step on them. Individual movement means the edge restraint has failed or the bedding sand has washed out. Left alone, the problem spreads outward like a zipper unzipping.
  • Weeds or grass sprouting through joints. Polymeric sand hardens when cured, but if it’s breaking down or was never installed right, gaps open up and roots get in. Those roots hold moisture against the pavers and make the base weaker over time.
  • Spalling or surface flaking. Concrete that chips or flakes at the surface is usually a sign the top layer cured too fast. In Texas heat, that happens when a slab is poured in direct summer sun without proper curing. It won’t heal on its own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Quikrete paver driveway installation in Austin, you’re looking at $7,000 – $18,000. A poured concrete driveway runs $4,500 – $12,000, and a full driveway replacement, including tear-out and haul-off of the old slab, lands between $5,000 and $14,000. The swing comes down to three things: total square footage, how much base prep the soil demands, and whether we’re hauling one slab away or rebuilding from dirt.

Every estimate we write gives you a line-item breakdown: materials, labor, base work, demo, and disposal. The number on that written estimate is the number on the invoice. No additive change orders because we hit rock or found buried debris. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation: if something fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every project.

For pavers, the written price includes the paver base, leveling sand, paver installation, polymeric joint sand, and edge restraint. For concrete, it includes the excavation, formwork, pour, finishing, and curing. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for before we break ground.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely check a few things yourself. Walk the driveway after a rain and mark low spots with a stick of chalk. Look at the joints between pavers and see if the sand has washed out. Take a screwdriver and probe the soil at the slab edge to see if it’s soft or eroding. That information helps us quote accurately.

What you should not do is tear out a failing concrete slab with a rented jackhammer and pour a new one over loose Texas clay. A full driveway pour requires proper base compaction, expansion joints at the right spacing, and curing discipline in hundred-degree heat. Get any of that wrong and you’ve bought yourself a second failure in five years. Concrete and pavers aren’t as instantly dangerous as electrical or high-tension work, but they’re heavy, back-breaking, and unforgiving of shortcuts.

If you want a real number for your driveway, call us at (325) 225-5429. We’ll walk the site, explain what’s underneath the problem, and hand you a written price. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
