Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Therma-Tru product that’s failed or is starting to show its age, we install and replace Therma-Tru-compatible kitchen components across Austin. A typical Therma-Tru kitchen remodel in Austin runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and whether you’re replacing a single failed component or doing a full tear-out. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a cabinet face has pulled loose from its hinge, a door won’t close flush anymore, or the finish on a Therma-Tru entry door leading into the kitchen has started to delaminate from years of Texas sun and humidity swings.

We’re Penhallow Remodeling Austin, and we’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Therma-Tru. We do, however, work with Therma-Tru products regularly, and we stock compatible hardware and replacement parts on our trucks for the most common failure points we see around Austin. Trevor Nash runs our Austin operation, and he built Penhallow on a simple idea: give you a written number before any work starts, then do exactly what that number says.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru makes a lot of entry and patio door systems, and in Austin kitchens we most often see their door components show up as the passage door between the garage and kitchen, the back door off a breakfast nook, or the French-style doors leading to a patio. The compatibility gotcha most people run into is this: Therma-Tru doors are built around a specific slab thickness, usually 1-3/4 inches, and the hinge mortises are cut to accept either standard 4-inch or 5-inch commercial hinges. If you try to swap a failed hinge or door slab with a generic big-box replacement, you’ll end up with a door that binds or won’t seat against the weatherstrip.

Identifying the right part comes down to the label. Look for a small rectangular sticker on the hinge edge of the door slab, usually with a serial number and a model code like Tru-Defense, Classic-Craft, or Smooth-Star. That code tells us the slab construction and the right replacement components. For most Austin homeowners, the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision on Therma-Tru parts comes down to this: OEM hardware matches without modification, while quality aftermarket hinges and thresholds from brands we trust often cost 30 – 40% less and hold up just as well in our climate. We’ll give you both options with a written price for each.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Door slab won’t stay closed or pops open on its own. This usually means the hinges have worn or the slab has sagged slightly, pulling the latch out of alignment with the strike plate. Austin’s summer humidity swells wood slabs just enough to make this worse.
  • Visible light or air coming through the edges of the door. The weatherstrip has compressed or torn. Once warm air starts moving through that gap, your kitchen picks up dust and your AC works harder all summer.
  • Finish is peeling, cracking, or turning chalky on the exterior side. Therma-Tru’s fiberglass skins handle Texas sun better than wood, but after 8 – 12 years of direct western exposure, the topcoat breaks down and the underlying color starts to fade unevenly.
  • Threshold is loose, cracked, or letting water seep toward the interior tile. We see this a lot in older Austin homes where the foundation has shifted slightly and the adjustable sill has been cranked past its limit.
  • Door won’t latch without slamming it or lifting the handle. The strike plate has moved, the hinges have compressed, or the slab itself has warped just enough to need re-hanging. This is the most common call we get for Therma-Tru kitchen doors in Austin.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

For a Therma-Tru door or component replacement as part of a kitchen remodel in Austin, you’re looking at $14,000 – $45,000 for a full project. A door-only replacement tied into an existing kitchen typically lands between $1,200 and $4,800 depending on whether we’re replacing the slab, the frame, or the entire pre-hung unit. What drives the range: slab type (fiberglass vs. steel), glass inserts, hardware grade, and whether the rough opening needs any reframing after we open the wall.

Every quote we write is a fixed, written number before any work starts. That number includes parts, labor, disposal, and cleanup. It also includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, no service call fee, no arguing about who caused what. That promise is in writing, on every job, alongside the Kingswell Guarantee that’s been the operating standard since 2004.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are safe to check yourself. You can tighten hinge screws that have backed out, clean the weatherstrip with a damp cloth, and adjust a strike plate with a screwdriver by moving it an eighth of an inch. Those are reasonable homeowner tasks. What we’d steer you away from: pulling a Therma-Tru slab off its hinges to re-mortise the hinge pockets, and messing with a threshold that’s been sealed to the subfloor. Both of those jobs go sideways fast if you don’t have the right shims and sealants on hand, and a dropped slab will crack tile and chip door casing before you can react.

If the door is binding, the slab has sagged, or water is getting past the threshold, call us at (325) 225-5429 and we’ll come take a look. Trevor’s usual line on a walkthrough is, “Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.” The estimate is free.
