Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We install and service Wellborn cabinetry and built-ins for home additions and ADU projects across Austin, and a typical Wellborn-equipped addition runs $45,000 to $130,000 depending on square footage, cabinetry scope, and finishes. Most owners call us because a Wellborn cabinet, door, drawer, or installed trim piece has failed inside an addition or ADU they built in the last five to fifteen years. The failure usually shows up as a drawer that sticks, a hinge that’s sagged, a door that won’t close flush, or a cabinet box that’s pulled away from the wall after Austin’s clay soil shifted under the slab. We carry Wellborn-compatible hardware, hinges, drawer glides, and finish-matched touch-up materials on our trucks, and we can usually match the exact door style and finish from the original order.

Penhallow Remodeling Austin is an independent remodeling contractor, not a Wellborn dealer or factory service center. That’s worth saying plainly, because it changes how we price and source parts. We’re not beholden to a showroom markup or a corporate service-route schedule. We order direct from Wellborn’s replacement-parts channel when we need something specific, and we stock the failure-prone hardware locally so we can fix most issues in one visit. If you’ve got a Wellborn cabinet or built-in in a South Congress addition, a Mueller ADU, or a Crestview garage conversion that’s not closing, latching, or holding square, this page will tell you what’s wrong, what it costs, and whether to touch it before calling us.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn has made cabinetry in Ashland, Alabama since 1961, and their lines show up all over Austin additions built from the early 2000s onward. The brand runs three main series: Wellborn Premier (semi-custom, full-overlay doors, soft-close hardware standard), Wellborn Estate (custom, often inset doors, maple or cherry boxes), and Wellborn Cabinet Essentials (stock, partial-overlay, entry-level hinge hardware). The easiest way to identify which line you have is the label inside the top drawer or on the back of the cabinet box near the hinge plate. Premier and Estate carry a Wellborn SKU and a door-style code stamped right there; Essentials boxes usually only carry a barcode sticker.

The compatibility gotcha that matters most: Wellborn switched its default hinge from a 35mm cup to a 40mm cup on full-overlay doors in 2012, and soft-close mechanisms went from clip-on to integrated around 2018. If you’re replacing a hinge on a 2010 Premier cabinet with a current-production hinge, the cup bore won’t match and the door will sit proud of the frame by about 2mm. We handle that by drilling the cup to 40mm on site, but it’s not a hand-screwdriver job. For aftermarket hardware, Blum and Salice both make Wellborn-compatible clips and glides, and we stock Blum soft-close inserts for the clip-on crowd. The OEM parts ship from Alabama, which adds 5 to 7 business days if you order them yourself; our truck stock covers the common failure items so a typical repair doesn’t wait on freight.

Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • A drawer sticks, catches, or scrapes when you open it. Austin’s summer humidity swells the maple and MDF drawer boxes, and once the box rubs against the face frame, the glide mounts start to strip. It’s usually the glide, not the wood, but left alone the box will crack.
  • A cabinet door won’t close flush or hangs at an angle. This is almost always the hinge plate pulling away from the face frame. Wellborn’s screws are fine for vertical load, but Texas heat cycles loosen them over time and the plate shifts, throwing the door out of square.
  • Soft-close doors slam or the soft-close mechanism is dead. The integrated damper inside the hinge cup has a lifespan of about 10 years in a hot Austin attic or west-facing ADU wall. When it fails, the hinge still works but loses the catch feature.
  • A cabinet box has separated from the wall or adjacent box, leaving a gap. We see this regularly in areas with expansive clay soil: Barton Hills, Northwest Hills, anywhere the slab moves seasonally. Wellborn boxes are doweled and glued, but the wall attachment relies on installer shims, and as the wall moves, the box can pull loose while the door still looks fine from the front.
  • Drawer glides grind, pop, or only roll on one side. Undermount glides on Premier and Estate lines use a plastic roller carrier that wears with accumulated cooking grease and limestone dust. Once the roller cracks, the drawer rides on one rail, which bends the rail over time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A stone counter, tile backsplash and open shelf after a kitchen remodel

For a Wellborn cabinet repair inside an Austin home addition or ADU, the installed price almost always lands between $250 and $900 depending on whether we’re swapping hardware, re-hanging a separated box, or rebuilding a drawer box. A full hardware refresh across a 10-drawer addition kitchen runs $1,800 to $3,400 including Blum glides and hinges, and a finish-matched door replacement runs $180 to $500 per door through Wellborn’s parts channel. If the failure is structural (box pull-away, cracked face frame from repeated slamming), the cabinet itself may need replacement, and that’s where the $45,000 to $130,000 addition number comes back into focus for a larger rebuild.

Every repair gets the same treatment as every remodel: a written price before we touch anything, no surprises after we open the cabinet. The quote includes parts, labor, and disposal of the old hardware. Our work on Wellborn cabinetry carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if it fails again inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, no service fee, no re-inspection cost. If the replacement door or drawer box from Wellborn arrives with a finish mismatch, that’s on us to resolve with Wellborn, not on you.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things without opening a toolbox: confirm the hinge screws are tight, look inside the top drawer for a label identifying the series, and test whether the problem follows the door or the box by swapping hinges between two doors of the same width. If the problem moves with the hinge, it’s hardware; if it stays with the door, it’s the bore or the door itself. What you should not do is disassemble a soft-close hinge cup without the right jig. The damper is under tension, and a slipped screwdriver through a Wellborn face frame is a $400 mistake we redo weekly. Adam, our lead cabinet tech, keeps the 35mm and 40mm bore jigs and a torque driver on the truck for exactly this reason.

If the cabinet box has pulled off the wall, that’s not a DIY project. A box hung incorrectly can fall, and a falling box full of stoneware in an occupied ADU doesn’t end well. We level, shim, and reattach to studs, then check the adjacent boxes for racking. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before we schedule anything.
