Wellborn Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Wellborn fence installation in Austin typically costs $3,500 – $9,000 fully installed, and we can usually match a Wellborn-compatible fence panel or post section within the same week you call. If you’ve got a Wellborn fence that’s leaning, pulling loose at the rails, or showing rot at the post bases, you’re looking at a replacement or reinstalled section, not a lost cause. Most Austin owners notice the problem the same way: a gate that suddenly drags on the ground, a post that wobbles when you push it, or pickets that have started to cup and split after a few hard Texas summers. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dollar replacing it.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn has built fence products under a few different lines over the years, and the compatibility question matters more than people expect. The most common installations we see in Austin are Wellborn pressure-treated pine dog-ear panels, Wellborn cedar picket sections, and the occasional Wellborn rail-and-post kit from the big-box era. The fastest way to identify your panel: flip one over and look for a stamp on the bottom rail or the picket ends. If the sticker is gone (and after two Texas summers, it usually is), measure the picket width and the rail span. Wellborn panels in this region commonly run 6 feet by 8 feet with 5/8-inch-thick pickets and 2×4 rails, but we’ve also measured plenty of 4-foot decorative sections that take a narrower picket profile.
– The gotcha: Wellborn panels from the box stores sometimes use a proprietary rail notch that won’t take a standard aftermarket picket cleanly. If you measure and the pickets sit in a channeled rail rather than being face-nailed, tell us that on the phone. We’ll bring the right profile the first trip.
– OEM vs aftermarket: Wellborn’s own replacement sections are fine if you can find them matched to your run, but we’ve found that a good locally milled cedar picket (Western red cedar, 5/8-inch, rough-sawn) holds paint and stain better in Austin’s heat than the original pine. We’re happy to install either. What we won’t do is sell you a “comparable” panel that doesn’t match your existing thickness and end up with a patchwork fence that looks like a quilt.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing
- Posts leaning at the base. In Austin, this is almost always what happens after a big rain event in the clay-heavy soils east of I-35 or along the Barton Creek greenbelt. The original post was set too shallow, set in concrete below the frost line without gravel drainage, or the wood rotted right at the soil line. You’ll see the lean get worse after every rainfall and every hard wind.
- Gate dragging or not latching. The gate frame has sagged, the hinges have pulled out, or the post has shifted. It usually starts as a small drag, then the latch stops lining up, and now the gate swings open in the wind and bangs against the house. That’s the point where you call us, not the point where you shim the hinges again.
- Pickets cupping, splitting, or pulling off the rails. The sun does this. Austin gets 300-plus days of direct UV every year, and a pine picket picks that up fast. Once the wood cups, the nails start backing out, and now you’ve got pickets twisting off the rail ends. This is a panel replacement, not a hammer-and-renail fix.
- Dark streaks, soft spots, or crumbling wood at the bottom rail. The bottom rail sits closest to the soil and catches irrigation overspray, runoff, and splashback. This is where Wellborn pine panels rot first. If you can push a screwdriver into the rail at one end, the rail is done. We see this most often in neighborhoods with automatic sprinklers, like Circle C and Avery Ranch.
- Fasteners rusting or snapping. Original Wellborn installations often used bright steel nails or cheap screws. After a few years in Austin humidity, the nails rust through, the heads snap, and the panel separates from the post. Once the fasteners are gone, the panel integrity goes with them.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a Wellborn fence section replacement or reinstallation runs $3,500 – $9,000 depending on how many sections are involved, whether we’re reusing existing posts or setting new ones, and the material grade you choose. For a single failing panel with good posts, the job sits at the lower end. If the posts are rotted and we’re digging out old concrete and setting new pressure-treated posts in gravel with proper drainage, the price climbs. Every quote includes the parts, the labor, the haul-away of the old section, and a written line-item price before we pick up a shovel. That’s the Kingswell standard, and it’s the only way we work. We also install materials where it makes sense from brands we trust, including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when a fence project runs alongside other exterior work. The workmanship comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, so if the section shifts or splits inside a year, we come back and fix it without a service fee.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: push on the posts to see which ones move, look at the fastener pattern on each panel, and note where the wood is soft. But fence work goes sideways fast for a weekend project. Digging out an old rotted post set in concrete in Austin’s rocky limestone soil is not a YouTube afternoon. Setting a post in clay without drainage is exactly how you end up where you started, leaning fence and all. And if a section of fence comes down on a neighbor’s side or around a gas meter or AC unit, you’ve made your problem bigger. That’s the honest line. FAQs

A Wellborn pine fence in Austin’s climate lasts 8 – 12 years with good drainage and regular staining; cedar holds up longer, closer to 15 – 20 years. The posts fail first, almost always from water sitting at the soil line. Call (325) 225-5429 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your fence is worth saving or replacing by section.
Yes, if the post is solid and only the pickets or a short rail section need replacement, we can repair just that section for less than a full replacement. If the post is rotted or the panel is pulling away from the rails, repair isn’t realistic and we’ll tell you so. Estimates are free, and the number you get first is the number you pay.
Most single-section replacements in Austin take one day, including removing the old panel, setting a new post if needed, and hauling away debris. Full fence replacements with multiple post settings run two to four days depending on access and weather. We’ll give you a real arrival window in writing before work starts.
We keep common 6-foot and 8-foot pressure-treated and cedar panel sections, cedar pickets, pressure-treated posts, rail stock, and heavy-duty gate hardware on hand for Austin jobs. If you need a specific Wellborn profile we don’t have on the truck, we can usually source it within a few days. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
